Internships (also known as field studies, volunteer experiences
and co-ops) are meaningful, career-related work experiences
that allow students to apply academic knowledge to the world of
work. They are critical for job placement after graduation.
There are numerous internship opportunities available through UCSC
departments, units and programs. Some internships are for academic
credit; others are paid positions. However, they all have the common
goal of providing career-related work experience.
General Academic Internships
Most departments offer students the opportunity to complete an internship
for academic credit. A few departments, for example, Economics,
Psychology and Environmental Studies actually have a field studies
program coordinator. Other departments offer an upper-division course,
normally 198 - Independent Field Studies, which is sponsored by
a faculty member from that department. Often the Field Study internship
may count as upper-division elective credit towards the major.
Each department has its own application process, however, most require
a petition form and sponsorship by a faculty member. Students interested
in this type of internship should contact the field studies program
coordinator or the undergraduate advisor.
