Kelly McDaniel, a second year business management economics major
and mathematics minor, was in charge of coordinating the program
for recruiting and retaining Mathematics majors and increasing their
chances of success after graduation for the Chancellor’s Undergraduate
Internship Program (CUIP). CUIP is a program sponsored by the Chancellor’s
Office, which employs 38 undergraduates in professional-level internships
in departments throughout the University.
Kelly’s duties for her project included creating and distributing
a monthly newsletter, advertising and posting flyers throughout
campus about the Undergraduate Colloquium series, and keeping math
students aware of opportunities available to them. She did this
through updating and adding many new web pages to the Math Department’s
website. These pages included scholarships, studying abroad, research
opportunities, fellowships, internships, career descriptions and
resources, graduate school resources, and past newsletters.
Her project for the year was to expand the current computer database
of relevant opportunities, create monthly newsletters, update and
make new web pages for Mathematics majors and help develop the new
peer-advising program. She also outreached to Mathematics Alumni
to come speak to undergraduates at a weekly colloquium about their
careers after graduating from UCSC.
Kelly has been very involved in outreach since arriving at UC Santa
Cruz. She worked as a university guide and volunteered in the Student
Ambassador Program. Her experience with web design, leadership and
passion for mathematics made her the perfect candidate for the Mathematics
Undergraduate Opportunities Coordinator position. She feels CUIP
has greatly strengthened her communication, organizational and leadership
skills and outreach strategies. Her internship also provided Kelly
with knowledge of the University’s structure and access to
leaders, organizers, and top administration at UCSC.
Kelly feels her experience with the CUIP program has greatly prepared
her for future endeavors. She plans on graduating next year, getting
her CPA, and starting a career in public accounting. She also plans
to go to graduate school in the future to get her MBA.
