Holly Rose Faith always had an interest in marketing as well as
making more opportunities available for students and people. Prior
to her internship as Marketing and Fund Development Intern for the
UCSC Career Center Internship Program, she worked diligently in
her academics as well as extra curricular activities that helped
her thrive and exposed her to new avenues. For example, six months
prior to her internship, she was a jail visitor for Friends Outside
in Santa Cruz, which provoked a passion for helping others. She
has always had a keen sense for understanding people and the ability
to converse with anyone, which made her an excellent candidate for
an internship that involves interacting with students, non-profits,
and business people of the community.
Holly Rose’s internship was always changing, from recruiting
students and mentors, to marketing, presentations to the rotary
and setting up valuable meetings for her and her mentor, Barbara
Silverthorne to attend. She views everything she has done as an
accomplishment, especially her “go-getter” attitude
to go out into the business world to recruit mentors for the Professions
Training Program. She was specifically proud of a presentation she
did to the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary. On her own, she developed
a power point presentation about the Career Center, its services
and the importance of internships for students. She conducted the
presentation with poise and enthusiasm and was well received by
the rotary. The presentation was given to about 50-70 people from
the business community for a twenty-minute duration. “Chances
and opportunities to speak at the rotary is such a wonderful way
to encourage community and UCSC internship involvement, and it was
an honor to be part of such a process,” Holly Rose said.
Her growth from the beginning of her internship to the end has been
outstanding. She feels as if she has gained an abundant amount of
confidence because of her duties and feels privileged to have been
able to be involved with the Career Center Internship Program. Holly
Rose feels that because of her experience, she has become more articulate
in expressing herself and has become more aware of the important
qualities it takes to interact with others inside an office and
out in a city.
Besides loving her internship, Holly Rose was very intrigued by
the course and being in a position to learn about the university
and how it works. The 2-credit course that took place in Fall and
Spring quarter helped Holly Rose understand the importance of internships
and the complexities of running such a large university. She realized
through the course the passion and excitement that so many faculty,
professors and administrators bring to the campus. “The CUIP
course was an excellent addition to the internship program. It allowed
for interns from different parts of the campus to interact with
one another, learn about the different values students have, and
speak with influential people of the campus, such as the Dean of
Undergraduates, Bill Ladusaw and the Chancellor, George Blumenthal.
The opportunity to be involved in such an opportunity was extremely
rewarding, given the fact that only 35 students have such a chance
every year.”
There is no doubt in Holly Rose’s mind that the CUIP Program
gave her the ability to open many doors as she leaves her undergraduate
career. Because of the program, she feels that she can step into
any job or profession and excel because of the skills she has gained.
Not only did her internship provide her with the opportunity to
express her intelligence and talents, it also helped her grow as
a student and a person. Her passion for “making things happen”
was encouraged by her internship, and her experience is unforgettable.
Even though she is in the process of deciding what immediate avenue
to take, she knows that her internship played a vital role in helping
her get to the place she will to go.
