CUIP Internship Orientation

Chancellor's Undergraduate Internship Program Eligibility and Requirements:

ELIGIBILITY: CUIP is an opportunity for undergraduate students in good standing (academic and judicial) in any major with at least one quarter at UCSC. Interns must be continuously enrolled as full time students during both the application process and the academic year of the internship.

TIME COMMITMENT: Three academic quarters, Fall through Spring. Interns work an average of 15 hours per week, 150 hours per quarter. Precise work schedules, tasks and deadlines are negotiated between the mentor and intern.

Interns are also required to attend a 2 unit course led by the Dean of Undergraduate Education. The Leadership and Institution Building course is required of all CUIP participants. The course is held on Monday evenings from 5-6:45 pm during both Fall and Spring Quarters.

  • Part of the class is devoted to skill building focusing on proposal writing and presentation skills.
  • Another part is focused on learning about leadership skills and how leaders work with constituent groups to reach consensus, generate solutions, and develop and implement plans.

Through a series of lectures and discussions lead by senior administrators, students will be introduced to the challenges faced in building an institution such as the University of California and specifically, UC Santa Cruz. Students will have the opportunity to discuss current issues with campus leaders and suggest solutions.

Course requirements include: attendance at all classes, required readings, assigned projects, and formal presentations of project proposal (fall) and of completed project (spring).

Question: Are interns required to be a full time student for the entire academic year and attend the Leadership Course on Monday nights from 5-6:45 pm during both Fall and Spring Quarters?
